A barcode system is a combination of software and hardware in which products are identified by barcode, and sales and stock movements are carried out by scanning barcodes. Instead of typing in the price by hand, the product is scanned and the price and stock come up automatically; wrong prices, missing stock and till shortages are largely eliminated.
In businesses that sell by weight, such as greengrocers, butchers, delicatessens and nut shops, the scale weighs the product and prints a barcode containing the weight and the price.
